Summary/Abstract: The starting point of Rodéo d’âme’s Eldorado Terezín production (2017) is the manuscript of a play that the director of the company, Claire Audhuy, found in the archives of the Terezín ghetto. This puppet play, entitled On a besoin d’un fantôme [We are looking for a ghost], was written in 1943 by a 13-year-old prisoner, Hanuš Hachenburg. It is a funny rewrite of Nazi atrocities, initially meant for a clandestine reading or production. The director considers that the play, which is striking through its literary qualities, can only ring true when incorporated within the context it was born into. This is why the first part of the production does not present the camp reality, but another rewriting of history, staged by the Nazi authorities in order to fool the Red Cross commission into believing that the Jews live happily in Terezín.
