Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to estimate the number and structure of employees and the economic base of urban areas in Poland. This is due to insufficient official statistics, including, in particular, shortcomings at lower levels of aggregation (commune) in the group of entities under 10 employed and location of some jobs by place of residence. This causes great difficulties in carrying out the most basic research and analyses, including those related to the socio-economic development of towns and cities. Therefore, an attempt was made to develop a formula that allows to calculate the estimate of the number of employees in municipalities based on data available from the Statistics Poland Office (GUS). These data were compiled by city and divided into 5 basic groups of PKD sections as true of 2016. Then, the surplus of employees in the urban areas was estimated in accordance with the concept of the economic base and its division into endogenous and exogenous parts. The study is an extended part of the project carried out for six voivodeship self-governments in 2019 (Śleszyński et al., 2019a). Although the results are estimated, it should be noted that the calculated data is more accurate than those given in official statistics. Therefore, one of the goals is the possibility of wide dissemination of algorithm and results for conducting scientific research and practical needs, in particular by local government institutions. For the convenience of obtaining this data, a link to load it in a spreadsheet format has been attached to the article.
