Summary/Abstract: The text seeks an answer to the question on the state of professionalization of social work in selected European countries. The professionalization of social work has been viewed through a combination of an approaches based on the attributes of the profession, on a functional and a conflictual approach. It is a comparative qualitative study. The comparative criteria are based on characteristics of professionalization in modern professional literature. Data published in German, English, Danish, and Czech dealing with the state of the social work profession in selected European countries were analyzed. Interviews were conducted with subject teachers, researchers, and practitioners. Not all attributes of the profession were met in any of the studied countries. The results are comparable with other comparative studies. The findings can be used for further discussion and activities of professional associations and decision-making bodies aimed at the development of social work.
