Summary/Abstract: This contribution investigates the “telephone book topos” from a socioonomastic perspective. According to it, Czech migration to Vienna is best conserved in the surnames of Viennese inhabitants. Against the historical background, the contribution discusses the frequency and linguistic integration as well as the discursive construction of Czech surnames in Vienna. It identifies two important aspects of the underlying name stereotypes: From a Czech surname’s etymology conclusions are drawn on the name bearer’s (linguistic or national) affiliation/origin, and from the name’s graphematics on the name bearer’s assimilation. Based on historical and contemporary data sources, three empirical case studies evaluate these name stereotypes.
