The Dogma of the Resurrection of the Body from the Perspective of Christianity and Transhumanism

Summary/Abstract: The faith of the Church focuses on the salvific events that took place in the life of Christ. His passion and death are completed in the resurrection.It becomes the key to understanding Christ’s mission and His message. It is the centrality of the resurrection to the Church’s faith that allows a positive view of the future of man and the world. Eschatological fulfillment is permeated by the hope of overcoming the weaknesses that - as a result of sin - affect human life. Ageing and dying are processes to which man is subjected contrary to his expectations and desires. Both processes are inevitable and do not happen without suffering. Can they be overcome otherwise than through the expectation of a new, resurrected body? Transhumanism offers its own answer to this question. This paper will present a Christian and a transhumanist understanding of the resurrection. Both are concerned with the future of man and his happiness. However, the means proposed and the end envisaged turnout to be decidedly different. Transhumanism, despite its similarity to the truths of the Christian faith, is far removed from the totality of biblical revelation.
