Summary/Abstract: In his apostolic letter Patris Corde, Pope Francis uses the term“creative courage” in describing the profile of St. Joseph, saying that it “emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties. In the face of difficulty, we can either give up and walk away, or somehow engage with it. At times, difficulties bring out resources we did not even think we had”. The reader of Francis’ text may be intrigued by this combination of creativity and courage. This article aims to discover the manifestations of creative courage that appear in several dimensions in the life of Joseph of Nazareth: the courage to be righteous,to sacrifice himself and be a servant, as well as the courage to be a father, to be holy. Examination of the figure of St. Joseph in the aforementioned contexts may serve to provide a model for modern men as regards their masculinity and their fulfillment of the roles of husband and father.
