Summary/Abstract: Haskovo Prison was built in 1885 and functioned as a penal institution until 1956. Its history until the coup of September 9, 1944 has been studied better because for 40 years it was part of the propaganda work of the then communist government, as evidence of the repression on convicted political prisoners, described as „fighters against fascism“. In support of this thesis, many memories of former political prisoners, photos and belongings from their stay in prison were collected over the years. The period of its history after the 9th Sept.coup is significantly poorer in terms of memories, documents, and photos are generally missing for completely objective reasons, but the collected memories complement the preserved archival documents and give an overview of the last12 years of its activity as a penal institution. Without claiming to be a complete and exhaustive study of the topic, the proposed article is a step towards in revealing Haskovo’s history, as well as part of the prison history in Bulgaria.
