Summary/Abstract: European continent is a continent of many nations, languages and cultures. It could seem that the heterogeneity of nations living in Europe prevails over the uniformity of its roots. The roots which unite the nations in the European area should be particularly sought for in ancient Greece and Rome, but also in the Christianity. The basis of a modern cultural identity of states in the 20th and 21st Centuries in the European area is deemed to be membership by states in the EU, European identity and widening the EU. Culture has special position in the EU. It can be considered as destabilising element, but on the other hand, it can be seen as stabilising. The last word in conclusion is the idea of multiculturalism as a policy of the recognition of and respect for the equal value of all cultures joins in the European Union and space.
