Summary/Abstract: The soundtrack of a movie, from the standpoint of the communication, is one of the most important andmost complex parts of the movie, of equal relevance to the fi lm itself. A movie’s soundtrack is a compact system that includesmultiple elements: dialogue, music, noises, atmosphere, ambiance, silence, and Sound FX. The ensemble of these has to becreated, recorded, put together, produced, cut, and mixed, edited and brought in concordance with the visuals of a movie, making it a serious challenge from a technological and artistic point of view, thus requiring many professionals to accomplishit, such as technicians, boom operators, sound engineers, composers, musicians, foley artists, sound designers, editors, musiceditors, directors, etc. Analysing and specifying each and every contributing person’s input and work during the making of amovie would take hundreds and hundreds of pages and so, in this article, I would like to outline only the main aspects of asound designer’s job in the pre-production, production, and post-production of a movie.
