Summary/Abstract: The paper provides an overview of the development and major changes that marked the first fifty years of the English Department, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš, i.e. from its founding in 1971, to the present day. The focus is primarily on the core English language courses of the curriculum. The paper is divided into three sections. The first and longest one covers the first three decades of life and work at the Department. The second, shortest, covers the pre-Bologna period, and the third provides an overview of the current status of the core English language courses as taught today. We hope that this overview will provide a benchmark for future studies.
