Summary/Abstract: Even after over two hundred years the Terror remains a controversial subject. My study traces the scholarly debates that have taken place on the question since 1989, when the „revisionist” interpretation given by François Furet dominated the scene. His reconstruction is founded on the categorical rejection of the so-called theory of circumstances. Instead, he favoured an ideological explanation of the Terror. In the last three decades, many historians have challenged the views expressed by the Furet-school. New generations of French and Anglo-Saxon scholars (social historians, historians of emotions, historians of political theory) seek to revise our understanding of the complex problem of the Terror with their interesting – and sometimes very debatable – results, although they all seem to agree that a new comprehensive orthodoxy – compared to that of the Marxist or the Revisionists – is very unlikely to emerge in the extremely fragmented state of the argument.
