Summary/Abstract: Believing in the Puritan providence, N. Hawthorne accepts the doctrine of the ancestral sin and, implicitly, human imperfection. With all his fascination with the power of evil, the writer dissociates himself from Puritanism by modernizing the effects of evil on the human being. The inclination towards moral ambivalence and bipolarity, brought to light by his experiment with the literary genre of 'romance', lies at the heart of Hawthorne's artistic formation, contributing to building the organic image of the world reflected in his work. Life is seen as a continual struggle between opposing forces, which interweave and balance permanently only to lose balance again. The article highlights the uniqueness of Hawthorne's work through the spherical form of his artistic vision that allows his character types to be permanently on a journey of discovery of their own identity. Denying any certainty, Hawthorne wipes out any boundaries between real and fiction, actual and imaginary, in an attempt to prove the possible salvation on the earth through the educational function of sin.
