The appearance of the verse novel and thinking about the genre in the history of Hungarian literature

Summary/Abstract: The history of the creation and development of genres, the development and spread of a genre is generally one of the difficult to trace phenomena. One can talk about linearly developing and easily transparent processes only in exceptional cases, yet more likely about breakpoints that can in some ways be regarded as decisive. In the case of the verse novel, at least as regards Hungarian literature, the breaking and turning points that have led to the emergence of the existing views of the genre are clearly reviewable. The study takes into account the historical stand points which in some respects are important for the spread and recognition of the verse novel as a genre, and also, the development of thinking about it.
