Summary/Abstract: The sibilants [s, z, ts, ʃ, ʒ, tʃ] show a unique distribution in the Northern-Moldavia dialect of Hungarian. Speakers tend to pronounce them as alveolar [s, z, ts], even where in Standard Hungarian and in the other dialects they are palatal [ʃ, ʒ, tʃ]. The phenomenon attracts researchers since the eighteenth century, still plenty of unanswered questions arise even now. Th is paper offers a synchronic analysis after summarising the results found in the literature. A case-study from Szabófalva is also published, which verifies the theoretical consequences developed in the paper.
