Summary/Abstract: Count Sándor Károlyi (1831–1906) was a significant public figure of a narrow but very influential group of the national aristocracy. He proved his talent and commitment to the nation in various areas of the domestic political, economic and social life. He inherited not only the prestigious wealth of his ancestors, but also the positive qualities that characterized the Károlyis, who were always in the service of the community. In our historiography he is considered primarily the “father” of the Hungarian cooperative movement and the leader of the agrarian movement. Breaking with the public politicization, that was common in the era, he paid a lot of attention to the anomalies (credit, property policy, trade, social issues) of those areas that disadvantaged agriculture and agricultural producers. In order to achieve his goals, he used the opportunities provided by party politics and the weapon of the pressure of social organizations. In realizing his aspirations, Károlyi devoted a prioritized role to the ideology and organizational tools offered by the cooperative movement, with the help of which he wanted to realize his vision: the creation of a Hungary based on strong economic foundations and social self-determination based on the cooperative principles.
