Summary/Abstract: Crisis situations tend to become more and more frequent in today’s security environment. Knowing the situation on the basis of accurate information, available at the right time, can determine decision-makers to use the air force as a credible deterrent measure to stop the escalation of the ongoing crisis. This decision should be taken on the basis of a realistic analysis process, which would lead to a de-escalation of the situation and without unrealistic expectations. Quality of the air assets, implications of air force use, its limitations, associated risks and expected benefits must be seen as a unitary system by decision-makers in the situation assessment and decision-making process. However, the use of the air force as a deterrent measure, similar to other deterrents, does not guarantee the elimination of the risk of crisis escalation.
