Summary/Abstract: The European Union is on the verge of an historic enlargement. The accession of ten new member countries in May 2004 will increase the EU’s size and population by nearly a third and extend its borders deep into the former Soviet bloc. EU enlargement is a major historical achievement, heralding the final transcendence of Europe’s bloody and divided past. From the perspective of transatlantic relations, however, it could not have come at a more difficult time. US-European relations have been badly frayed by the war in Iraq, and are undergoing serious re-evaluation on both sides of the Atlantic. For this reason, an interesting and important question to ponder is: What will be the impact of EU enlargement on the United States and on transatlantic relations?
