Rehabilitation Educator or Criminal Manager? Between Case Work and Case Management in the Supervision of a Probation Officer

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to discuss contemporary social rehabilitation tendencies that can enhance the perspective of risk management on the way to reducing recidivism. It is about the reconstruction of the content encompassed in the Polish literature of the subject on the issues related to the implementation of actuarial solutions for the tradition- ally oriented rehabilitation pedagogy. The analysis contained in the article have been divided into two main parts. The first part presents a general characteristic of the signaled trends in social rehabilitation, which emphasize the use of the actuarial approach in order to reduce crime. The second part highlights the challenges faced by probation officers in the face of the increasing popularity of actuarial solutions in probation practice. The focus was put on the types of factors included in the forecasting and determining the necessary competences of the probation officer as an actuary educator and on the need for accurate and reliable tools to measure the risk of recidivism.
