Summary/Abstract: This article represents an attempt to formulate a typology of vocal performance styles in Polish traditional music. The main research criterion is subjective impression-related perception based on auditory analysis. The styles are described on the basis of singers’ archive recordings and the author’s own experiences of traditional singing practice. Five styles are distinguished: old, classical, simple, ornamental and sentimental. An important part of the study is the use of the semantic method of voice timbre description. The author discusses performance style as a cognitive and cultural category, in relation to issues of individuality and canon in folksong. She refers to the category of naturalness and its role in discourse on traditional song.
