Thinking with Care: Theater, Archive, Historiography

Summary/Abstract: This article offers a review of the edited volume The Methuen Drama Handbook of Theatre History and Historiography (2020). The reviewer focuses on the ideological and methodological assumptions of the editors while paying particular attention to the inspirational role of the archival and affective turns in humanities. She brings out the issues that accentuate the political and ideological aspects of working with theater archives, especially the power relations latent in historical documents as well as the researcher's multifaceted relationship with the object of study. She also draws attention to the ways in which the position of the historian can be problematized and to the significance of the socio-political contexts of theater in its historiography.
