Summary/Abstract: The story of the disobedient prophet shows the mission of choice. Thechosen one enjoys the blessing of YHWH as long as he is obedient to theassigned mission, as long as he goes to other nations ; his election sendshim to the world. The history of Israel and the Book of Jonah show that thechosen nation has carried out its mission to the nations reluctantly, evenagainst itself. The chosen nation has never been a missionary in the senseof an organized mission. Israel, on the other hand, is a missionary becauseof the way it radiates to the nations, being a light to them. The Book of Jonahinspires the universalism of salvation, which has borne much fruit inPersian, Hellenistic and Roman times, especially in the diaspora. The story of Jonah swallowed by a great fish inspires missionary activity, which, however, can be fully realized in the messianic times. Then Israeland the nations will live with YHWH through the covenant that comesthrough Israel to the nations. From Pentecost, among the proselytes comingfrom the ends of the world, the mission is realized by proclaiming themessage, in whose heart is the sign of Jonah : Jesus suffered, died on thecross, was buried and God raised him from the dead after three days (cf.Acts 2 :22-36).
