Summary/Abstract: On the Brickyard Hill in Gherla, as you exit from the city, on the road to Nicula Monastery, there is a cemetery with a special history. It is located near by one of the city’s cemeteries, but it is much older than that one. And there is a contrast that, if you look closer, it strikes you. The new cemetery of the city is beautiful, with neat graves: each with its own name, of its own family; people come and light candles for their loved ones, bring them flowers. The other cemetery was, until recently, like a ghost: deserted, derelict, forgotten, lost among thorns, thistles and garbage; ordinary, anonymous... the cemetery of the convicts in Gherla. The present article tells the story of this cemetery. It also presents the Epitaf project, a project to incorporate all the cemeteries in the country on the map of the Romanian Gulag.
