Summary/Abstract: The study represents an incursion in the history of the cemeteries of Cluj from the 15th-18th centuries. At that time, the cemeteries were located around churches, monasteries, hospital establish- ments, in quarantine areas for the sick, in the city’s defense ditch and in public cemeteries. The oldest burial places were located around the medieval places of worship in the Old Fortress, respectively around the parish church of St. Michael. Archaeological research carried out in Feleac has revealed tombs both inside and outside the church built before 1488. In the 16th century, after the significant increase of the city’s population, when Cluj became the third city of Transylvania according to the number of inhabitants, the need for new burial places also increased. Public cemeteries were put into use, such as the “Hanjongard Cemetery” (or “Central Cemetery”), which became the main burial place, and the “Cemetery in the small field” or the Crişan Street Cemetery as it is known today. Until the 18th century, burials took place both inside and around the churches in the city. The study mentions various personalities who were related to the history of educational institutions in the city and who sleep their eternal sleep in the cemeteries of Cluj.
