Oral History as a Tool for Museum Participation

Summary/Abstract: Oral history is participatory in nature, as it places at its centre a dialogue through which – as part of an interview – an original, subjective message is co-created. In terms of the methodological assumptions of oral history and various models of museum participation – building, education, and activism – I analyse the interpenetration of these two phenomena and their mutual dependencies in the context of museum activities. I also describe three models of participatory activities and selected oral history projects implemented in Polish museums, analysing their characteristics, and confirming the participatory potential of the oral history method in museum activities.
