The reconstruction of manifestations of children’s e-culture generated in the digital space for being together. A report on netnographic research

Summary/Abstract: The aim of a study was to reconstruct manifestations of children’s e-culture generated in the courseof children’s Internet communication at selected web sites (Facebook, MovieStarPlanet, Gry.pl).Data were accumulated in a netnographic manner. Processing (text, visual and audio-visual) dataand their interpretation was performed by a qualitative content analysis, which revealed many peculiarmanifestations of children’s culture. This includes an absence of temporal and spatial boundariesof children’s culture, the mediated nature of its members’ contacts, the involvement of children inthe network, the existence of culture in external memory, the electronic character of culture creationsand their ephemeral and peculiar nature. This indicates the new, digital nature of children’s culture,which seems to produce an increase in children’s community-related actions and strengthens theirautonomy and their resistance potential towards the school and increases their participation in thedigital culture, which serves to break down barriers between children.
