PERIODIZATION OF THE HISTORY OF MACEDONIAN MEDIEVAL LITERATURE

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this research is to help us complete the History of Macedonian Medieval Literature, expected to be published in the near future. In it we locate the historical and developmental integrity of Macedonian medieval literature from the 9th until the end of the 14th century, where the phenomenological and cultural foundations of Macedonian contemporary literature and literary tradition can be found. During the so-called Early Middle Ages (between the second half of the 6th and the beginning of the 9th century) the literary and historical processes in Macedonia were in correlation with the ongoing trends in the early Byzantine literary tradition, and it is in this historical frame that we examine the Macedonian-Byzantine literary connections and influences. The literary and historical processes of the High Middle Ages, the period between the 9th and the 14th century, are directly evident in the contemporary Macedonian literary tradition. In this case the periodization of Macedonian Medieval Literary History is based on historical and development principles. The historical development of Macedonian Medieval Literature from the 9th until the end of the 14th century is divided in three basic historical and development periods: 1) From 845 until 1018; 2) From 1018 until 1204/1261; 3) From 1261 until the end of 14th century. The general periodization is also divided in several historical and functional subphases.
