Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to the relationship between the theory of psychiatry and the architecture of psychiatric institutions. Starting from the Enlightenment tradition and its concept of human nature – and by extension – a change in the perception of the mentally ill, through the birth of a new medical specialty, psychiatry, the author discusses a number of changes that took place in the 19th century, including the elementary forms of treatment and a new model of care. It aimed to separate patients with varying degrees of illness, which was reflected in the architectural design. New achievements of medicine had a fundamental impact on the broadly defined shape of transformed or newly creat-ed institutions in Europe and the United States, and the modern spatial and functional solutions ap-plied at that time have not lost their relevance.
