“Born with a Defect of Polishness,” or The Spring to Come on the Therapy Couch

Summary/Abstract: This text is a proposal to investigate the problems of Polishness by means of the patterns of psycho-logical functioning that are characteristic of it. Assuming that they are subject to the cultural trans-mission through works of literature belonging to the national canon, an analysis of Stefan Żerom-ski’s The Spring to Come (Przedwiośnie) was conducted using the tools of psychotherapeutic theo-ries. It revealed a split in Polishness treated as an object. In light of the material provided by the novel, it can be assumed that a current problem of Polishness is the transmission of paranoid-narcissistic patterns of psychological functioning produced by a now archaic state group in reaction to events that were traumatic for it. While in the past they helped it survive, for modern Polish soci-ety they are dysfunctional and potentially destructive.
