What about the Agency? The Material Turn in Childhood Studies

Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to the concept of agency, crucial in the studies on childhood. It also charac-terizes the ways in which its original understanding – consistent with the substantive interpretation of the causal subject reflexively acting in social reality – is questioned and expanded by the per-spective of new materialism. This understanding is redefined as part of broader assemblages and networks of human and nonhuman actors, and is the product of various, not only intergenerational (and intra-generational) negotiations, but also of relationships between causal actors.
