Three onomastical remarks

Summary/Abstract: The present paper is based on the materials collected in author’s “Oronyms of Serbia”, a comprehensive dictionary she published in four previous volumes of this journal. It consists of three parts. In the first of them, the oronym Pastorak is interpreted as going back to Rumanian păstór ‘herdsman’ rather than to the homonymous Serb. pastorak ‘stepson’. In the second part, the fact that the related Slavic word pastir ‘(shep)herd’, unlike ovčar ‘shepherd’, govedar ‘cowhand’, kozar ‘goatherd’, etc., do not occur in the oronymy of Serbia, is explained by its pre-Christian sacredness within the cult of Veles / Volos, a god of cattle. In the third part of paper, possible mythologically motivated oronyms are discussed, not only those deriving from mythological names such as Perun, the thundergod, or vila ‘fairy’, but also some derivatives of zoonyms (vuk ‘wolf’, pas ‘dog’, konj ‘horse’, koza ‘goat’, petao ‘cock’), on the assumption that the animals in question were sacred to pagan deities
