Summary/Abstract: In my text, I am concerned with several modern German short autobiographies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries written by Hermann Hesse, Klabund, Bertolt Brecht and Adalbert Stifter. In order to characterize these texts, I use the term “Autobiographical Fragment”, which is leaned from the Romantic poetics. This term refers to the tendency of modern autobiography to demonstrate, discuss, and experimentally perform the fragmentarity both of the text and of the autobiographical “I”. All limits, which are a part of the genre of the autobiography, therefore may be not only made to a theme and topic, but also crossed and transcended. I try to expose this phenomenon on the motifs of birth and death in chosen experimental texts.
