The work of the Hrodna magistrate in the second half of the seventeenth century

Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to activities of the Hrodna magistrate in the second half ofthe seventeenth century. The diffi cult period of the war of 1654–1667 provoked theproblems connected with the restoration of the work of the magistrate. The researchis based on the books of the court’s records. In the postwar period, the role of thevoyt increased. He attended meetings and oversaw the work of the magistrate. Themagistrate faced a number of problems. Moscow troops severely damaged the courtarchives. The town was ruined. The population of the town decreased. Townspeoplebecame poor. Hrodna was in fi nancial crisis. The cases of corruption were betweenoffi cials. It took long period of time to set up the work of the magistrate and to introduceorder in the town.
