Summary/Abstract: Church books of parishes are primarily regarded as sources of local history. As such, they have been and are largely ignored by historians, being consulted mainly by the authors of village monographs. In the case of Roșia, we are dealing with a Church book started in 1685 which contains a high and varied number of liturgical, literary, economic and demographic notes. Among them, two belong to genres rarely found in rural parish records. The first are division letters noted down by the pastor, teacher and jurors of the community in order to preserve the wealth of orphaned minors. They provide a detailed image of the material situation of the local inhabitants. The second unique genre encountered in this document is the attempt of Pastor Stefan Herrmann (ca. 1670‒1731) to justify the scarce material situation of his parish by introducing chronicle-like explanations and well-known classical and biblical quotations referring to the period of his pastorate in Roșia (1699‒1707), which includes the period of the Kuruc Uprising. Such notes are among the few regarding the movements of troops and the devastation of the Fundus Regius during the aforementioned conflagration. The introduction preceding the edition of the two sources offers a detailed description of the Church book, as well as the framing into the general historical context of the notes made by the evangelical pastors of Roșia.
