Summary/Abstract: This article aims to illustrate the linguistic particularities of Bukovina pre- and post-First World War by analyzing linguistic policies and concrete measures taken as to ensure their implementation. The transition of this region from the ‘periphery’ of the multilingual Habsburg Empire to the ‘periphery’ of the nation-state Romania brought about changes regarding the official status of the German language and its use in the educational system, which also influenced its prestige and popularity among the various ethnic groups living together. The article mirrors and discusses these processes by also referring to education laws and yearbooks.
