Summary/Abstract: In the 1860s – 1870s thousands of Crimean and Circassian refugees were settled down in Northwestern Bulgaria. The article sheds light on the settlement network and its fate after the Russo-Ottoman war of 1877-1878. It explores the positive and negative factors in the restart of the everyday life, the family structure, the land supply and their economic activities. It regards as untenable the view that the Crimean refugees progressed significantly in comparison with the Circassians. The article bases on documents held at the Oriental Department by the National Library “Sts. Cyril and Methodius”, the Central State Archive and the library of the Turkish History Society.
