Summary/Abstract: Because of its century-long development as a city and a capital, Moscow did not change its capital city status, even after St. Petersburg was declared the official capital of the Russian Empire. It remained a living being, in which in the nineteenth century the active and full of energy and new ideas driving force, were the merchants. That was despite their rigid customs and specific way of life. The object of the current study is the daily life of the Moscow merchants, their busy and monotonous workdays, their customs, rooted in them for generations, which determine both their daily life, but also their business life. The places of the daily life, home and appearance of the merchant and his wife are presented, as well as the main commercial sites, but also the ‘second category’ places for trade – the markets, with all their colorfulness and lack of basic hygiene; the fairs, taverns, restaurants and clubs. The topic is too voluminous to be developed with all its components and nuances in one study. The life of the city and of the Moscow merchants is presented with its most characteristic features.
