Summary/Abstract: A deposition by Wilhelm („Willie”) Plänk found in a German archive made it possible to reconstruct part of the actions of a little known Waffen-SS detachment stationed in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. This modest office worker (trader) made a career as an officer, rising to the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer. That document made it possible to confront it with information about the true activities of the SS cavalry. The soldiers from SS-Totenkopf-Reiterstandarte/SS-Kavallerie-Regiment 1. and 2. /SS-Kavallerie-Brigade were involved in crimes against Poles and Jews, culminating in the involvement of SS-Kavallerie-Ersatz-Abteilung Warschau in the pacification of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto.
