Functions of literary anthroponyms in Polish novels

Summary/Abstract: The author presents first names and surnames of fictional characters which later appear in texts written by other authors. It can be said that there are two objectives of such a solution: 1. giving new characters the names and/or surnames of characters from other works; 2. transferring metaphorical meanings that are carried by nomina propria known from most renowned and recognisable literary texts. When it comes to the first objective, the author shows the secondary use of surnames from S. Żeromski’s books in a crime novel, taking over a name and a surname from A. Szklarski’s novel by the Kuźmińskis, as well as references to the same names used both by older and more recent literary works. As regards the second objective, the author presents literary use of anthroponyms that have gained metaphorical meanings: Cinderella, Don Quixote, Robinson, Faust, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliett, Werther, Alice (from Wonderland), Sherlock Holmes, Anne (of Green Gables), Zagłoba, Wołodyjowski, Borejko. Literary contexts are compared with some dictionaries: Słownik eponimów czyli wyrazów odimiennych [Dictionary of Eponyms or Words Derived from Names], Słownik mitów i tradycji kultury [Dictionary of Myths and Traditions of Culture], Skrzydlate słowa [Winged Words] and Alfabetyczny wykaz onimów bazowych i ich derywatów [Alphabetical Index of Basic Proper Names and Their Derivates] by B. Dereń.
