Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the functioning of languages within societies, their roles as instrument of political power and doctrinal manipulation. According to the author, the language can only function on given socio-historical segments, in strict accordance with the culture, traditions and mentality of the time. Apart from being an instrument of communication, language is power, from a political and social point of view. In the Republic of Moldova, the national identity issue is also linguistic. Following the Russian imperial occupation, and then the Soviet one, the current population of the Republic of Moldova still feels the aftermath: identity confusion expressed by the Moldavian-Romanian pair, which acquires contradictory, sometimes conflicting dimensions within society. The problem of the correct denomination of the official language in the Republic of Moldova is well known for its political context, having an eventful history, going back into the mists of centuries. The official language spoken in the Republic of Moldova is Romanian - the same language that is spoken in Romania, one of the official languages of the European Union. This is a reality that also corresponds to scientific truth; linguists know very well there is no such thing as a Moldovan language. However, the legal solution to this problem came as a result of a political initiative in 2013. The author of the article presents his own experience and his contribution, as a member of the Moldovan parliament and as a linguist, to the constitutionalization of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova, based on French experience.
