Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on Indonesian polite speech acts fulfilling the communicative function of condolence, placed on flower boards ordered in a flower shop after a person’s death by relatives or associates of the deceased, located near the deceased’s home or workplace or the funeral home or cemetery. The research material consists of 161 acts of condolence extracted from almost 900 flower boards photographed in several cities in Indonesia. The purpose of qualitative analysis of the collected data is to reconstruct a syntactic pattern of condolences and to provide a formal and linguistic description of their individual sequences. The study demonstrates conventionalisation of the presented speech acts, manifested in the use of the same structure scheme and linguistic template.
