Summary/Abstract: The first idea of establishing a museum on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina appeared in 1850 and was suggested by Friar Ivan Franjo Jukić. He presented the idea in the journal Bosanski prijatelj (Bosnian Friend). It is the first idea of institutional collecting and preservation of cultural monuments in these areas and the first initiative to establish a museum. However, his attempt to institutionalize and professionalize this sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina failed. The gradual realization of his idea began nearly four decades later. In addition to this mention, there were other initiatives and ideas for the establishment of the museum, which, due to the lack possibilities for their realization, were unsuccessful. In the paper, the author analysed several initiatives at a time distance from 1879 until the beginning of World War II, which, although not realized, will remain permanently recorded as a valuable attempts to form a network of such institutions in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
