MEDIA REPORTING OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA WEB PORTALS ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Summary/Abstract: In the context of gender-based violence against women, its spread and the factors that cause it, it is impossible not to talk about the influence of the mass media as a creator of public opinion. Although they should be promoters of positive social events that include raising awareness of gender stereotypes, discrimination and gender-based violence, there is a ubiquitous presentation of women as a sexual object in the BiH media, which in no way contributes to reducing violence. Online media have become the most frequently used communication channels for propagating various goals and influences on public opinion, and even in presenting sexist content, accompanied by explicit photographs that often call for gender-based violence. The paper is based on the hypothesis that Bosnian portals use sensationalist elements that can initiate further violence, prejudice and discrimination when reporting on gender-based violence against women. The aim of this paper is to investigate and analyze to what extent and in what way Bosnian web portals, Bljesak.info and Buka.com report on gender-based. The paper consists of an overview of theoretical analysis that includes the media and gender-based violence against women, and an empirical aspect that includes the presentation and analysis of media content on the portals Bljesak.info and Buka.com, as well as the analysis of the survey. The results of the research show that the portals Bljesak.info and Buka.com use sensationalist language when reporting on gender-based violence against women.
