Summary/Abstract: The Museum of Sarajevo is the only museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina that, as a public institution, employs a curator of anthropology. In the recent museum practice in the world today and since the 80s of the last century, there is a tendency according to which the focus of interest is placed on topics related to contemporary society and the development of different cultures. Ethnographic objects themselves are not ethnographic, they are a testimony of the past, whose interpretation gives us general information about life and the past, but through them it is possible to penetrate into the deeper structure of a particular phenomenon or problem. Therefore, it is necessary to read them in the context of modernity, because they acquire new meanings at the level of the culture in which they emerged, used and introduced and then single them out from the museum collection. This paper provides a brief retrospective overview of the history of the ethnographic (ethnological) collection of the Museum of Sarajevo, which, along with archaeological and other objects, allows anthropological studies to be written on the products of human life and activity. Furthermore, data on the founding of the anthropological collection as well as on the first cultural anthropological exhibition in the Museum of Sarajevo are also given.
