Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on selected books from the “Przez Rzekę” series. Upon the example of Intoxicated by My Illness by Anatole Broyard, Shadow Child by Pieter Frans Thomése, and To jest wasze życie by Małgorzata Baranowska the author presents three different strategies of coping with dire misfortune (terminal and chronic illness, the loss of a child) by means of literary activity. Here the object of interpretation is not so much literature as its somewhat “magic” use for the purpose of self-therapy. The second part of the article deals with the problem of ageing, the functioning of memory, and the phenomenon of nostalgia. The point of departure for the author’s reflections is The Nostalgia Factory. Memory, Time and Ageing by Douwe Draaisma.
