Summary/Abstract: Architecture marks the appearance of every city, and represents a symbol of its history and culture. In Sarajevo, it is a result of turbulent times and different ruling systems changing over a period of time. The construction work in the city, which arose with arrival of the Austro-Hungarian rule on the brink of the two centuries, creates architecture style of the City which represents a unique dialogue between the Eastern tradition, local culture and the Western influence. Progressive construction development in Sarajevo brings a lot of young architects who left behind numerous works seen in different European styles of the time (Historicism and Secession), as well as in unique styles of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Pseudo-moorish and “Bosnian style’’). City of Sarajevo nests on the crossways of historical events. Its history is crowded with examples of numerous traits of destruction of cultural and historical monuments. Therefore, well-designed long-term activities directed towards preservation of the cultural integrity are an imperative. The Austro-Hungarian cultural heritage (1878 - 1918) takes important place in the vast mixture of architecture styles found in Sarajevo. These sites are an important part of the cultural identity of all Sarajevans due to its architectural, historical and artistic features. Today, the Institute for Protection of Cultural atid Historic and Natural Heritage of Canton Sarajevo, a century after its establishment, has decided to focus on preservation and promotion of a part of this heritage, at the same time presenting creative achievement of architects who built the City which was a real challenge.
