Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to semantic analysis of a language unit wydarzyło się [coś] ([something]happened). Dictionary definitions of this expression are unsatisfactory for manyreasons, which justifies undertaking such research. Semantic analysis was based onseveral methods specific to it: scrutinising contexts of usage of the selected languageunit wydarzyło się [coś], formulating hypotheses about the components of its meaningand verifying these hypotheses using contradiction tests. In the research process, complexmeaning of the language unit was decomposed into simpler semantic components. One of them was formulated in the following way: ‘p (something that happened) is suchthat x is not indifferent to p.’ This component of meaning distinguishes the analysed unitfrom other synonymous units and regulates its usage in language as well, i.a. it conditionsthe emergence of individual, highly subjective judgements of the state of affairs p in itsimmediate context.
