Summary/Abstract: The article aims at presenting a concise survey of genealogical research carried out on medieval knighthood by native scholars. The presented outline includes not only history and methodology of genealogical research, understood most of all as a reconstruction of family and noble lines’ histories, but also currently popular prosopographical research. The study discusses in detail the beginnings of Polish genealogical research on medieval knighthood, starting from two prominent scholars, Antoni Małecki and Franciszek Piekosiński, onwards to Władysław Semkowicz and his disciples. A lot of attention is also paid to the contemporary scholars and their works, as well as to changing methodological scope. On the margin of the mainstream discussion the study contains numerous references to the essence and significance of genealogy in general sense.
