Summary/Abstract: Various forms of organization of craftsmen existed in the territory of medieval Serbian countries, in the form of either public or private law relations. While based on numerous data it has been established that there was business cooperation and even association between domestic traders and craftsmen, the issue of formal legal organization of craftsmen in urban centers is less clarified due to poorly preserved sources. In this paper, based on the available parallels, the existing data from written or material sources have been reconsidered. Against such a broad background, it was possible to indicate the presence of elements of formal legal craft organizations – guilds, as suggested by the use of the title of the protomagister in the middle of internal hierarchy in urban centers in medieval Serbia.
