Summary/Abstract: The article presents the various forms of institutional support provided for the intellectually disabled, mainly in regard to occupational enablement. In the first decades of the 20th century the western world was dominated by a segregation-oriented system of care, while the persons exercising control over persons held in total institutions were caretakers. Following the passage in Poland of a bill on 27 August 1997 on occupational and social rehabilitation, and the employing of disabled persons, there was gradual change enabling disabled persons to achieve ever fuller participation in society and at work. Various helping occupations began emerging, such as occupational therapist, disabled person’s assistant, or work coach. Yet participation in the life of society and the job market among the disabled, and particularly the intellectually disabled, still encounters numerous obstacles to this day.
