Summary/Abstract: Monastic rites (typika) constitute an important source of ecclesiastical history and an essential element in the formation of ecclesiastical canon law. The content of monastic rites has been of great interest to scientific research throughout history. Based on their content, there are two different categories, i.e. provisions for daily rituals performed in the monastery, while the second category includes the canons that regulate the life of the monks, and the administration of the monasteries in general. The founders of the monasteries and authors of the rites are usually the abbots, or the one who appoints the abbot, i.e. the one who is responsible for administration. The monastic rites define the structure of monastic administration and the way of life of the community in all its aspects, such as entering the monastic community, the stage of probation, deposition, renunciation, the monastic vow and its consequences. Monastic rites are a valuable source of information concerning the organisation and legal status of the monasteries, but they are also of great importance for the study of Byzantine history.
